Straight talk about accuracy: Gold Identifier analyzes what a camera can see, including color, luster, form, surface texture and any visible stamps. That makes it an excellent first-pass screen and a genuinely useful reference, but no photo-based tool can measure metal content. Treat karat figures as estimates and confirm anything valuable with a hallmark check, an acid test or a professional XRF assay before you buy, sell or insure it.
How It Works

Identify Gold in 3 Simple Steps

No jeweler's loupe, no appointment, no guesswork. Here's how the app reads a piece of gold from a photo.

1

Capture or Upload

Photograph the item in bright, even light on a plain background: a ring, chain, coin, bar, nugget or a whole tray of pieces. Or pick a photo you already have.

2

AI Analyzes the Piece

The AI reads color and luster, surface texture, form and any hallmark stamps it can resolve, then matches them against a reference library of gold types, coins, bullion and jewelry styles.

3

Get the Full Picture

See what the item most likely is with a confidence score, an estimated karat range, what the hallmark means, and what that weight and purity is worth at today's gold rate.

FAQ

Gold Identifier: Frequently Asked Questions

Everything worth knowing before you download.

Can an app really tell if my gold is real?
Gold Identifier tells you what the item most likely is and what its hallmarks mean, using AI image analysis. It's a fast first-pass screen and a genuinely useful reference, but a photograph can't measure metal content. A confirmed answer on authenticity or exact purity always needs a hallmark check, an acid test, or a professional XRF assay. See all 8 ways to check →
How do I identify gold from a photo?
Shoot in bright, even daylight against a plain, non-reflective background, fill the frame with the piece, and get any stamp in focus. The AI then analyzes color, luster, form and visible markings and names the most likely item with a confidence score. Read the photo guide →
What does the 916 hallmark mean?
916 means 91.6% pure gold: that's 22 karat. It's the most common mark on Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry. Other frequent stamps are 999 (24K), 750 (18K), 585 (14K) and 375 (9K). Full 916 explainer →
Can it tell 18K from 14K?
If the karat stamp is legible in your photo, yes: the app reads it and explains it. Without a stamp, the app gives an estimated range based on color tone and appearance, which is a useful starting point but not a measurement. Alloy colors overlap, so anything you're about to buy or sell should be tested. Karat guide →
Does the app show live gold prices?
Yes. Live gold rates are available across multiple currencies, and the built-in calculator turns weight and purity into a value figure so you can check an offer on the spot. See how the maths works →
Does it work on coins, bars and nuggets: not just jewelry?
Yes. The database covers bullion coins, minted and cast bars, natural nuggets and placer gold as well as jewelry, each with information on what it is, how it's made or formed, and what markings to expect. Coins & bars guide →
How much does Gold Identifier cost?
Free to download on iPhone and Android. Premium is $4.99 per week or $29.99 per year, both auto-renewing until cancelled, and unlocks unlimited AI identifications, My Collection, scan history and gallery scanning.
Are my photos and scans private?
Your scans and collection are tied to your device and are never published or shared with other users. Photos you submit for identification are processed to produce a result. Our privacy policy sets out exactly what is collected, why, and how to request deletion.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, not by us. On iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android, open the Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Need help? Email app-support@md-tech.in.
